Whenever I'm interviewing an experienced guitarist with the view of teaching them I first run a series of tests to see exactly where the perspective student is 'at'.
Just because someone has done something for a long time does not automatically qualify them as being any good at it; it only means that they have been 'doing' something for a long time... nothing else, over the years their guitar playing skills may have actually deteriorated or at best they may be simply going around in circles picking up a hot lick here and random chord there.
As I'm speaking to the perspective student I suddenly pick up the guitar and turn away from the guitarist so they cannot see the fretboard of the guitar, I play a familiar chord, one that they would have heard many times in the playing career and I ask them what chord am I playing... to their surprise most of the time they cannot answer correctly.
Remember, I'm not playing E7#9, Bb13b9 or some more obscure chord that only jazz players would recognize, I'm talking about E, D and A7... garden variety chords that almost every guitarist plays daily. Of course this tells me immediately how developed the guitar player's ear is.
Why can't they pick simple chord sounds? The answer is simple... to develop your musical ear you must may a conscious effort to remember the sounds you are playing.
Jot that down... it's important "to develop your musical ear you must make a CONSCIOUS effort to remember the sounds you are playing or hearing."
Surely we down need to practice hearing, unless we a born deaf we can all hear very well can't we? I agree unless a person is deaf we all can hear, the distinction we need to make is between 'hearing' and listening.
Hearing is being aware of sounds in your environment such as a truck or bus driving past in the street... you are aware of the sound but you are not really listening intently to what type of motor it is, it's just a bus going past. It's important for your survival to be able to identify sounds but we don't really get past the initial identification of that's a 'lawn mower, phone, or bus' type signal.
Listening on the other hand for the musician has many different levels.
The reason why or 'experienced' guitar playing friend cannot correctly identify a familiar chord is because he or she did not make a conscious effort to register the chord in their memory; quite possibly they have playing this particular chord hundreds of times in their guitar playing experience but they have been busy looking a the chord symbol on the paper and not paying attention to the sound of the chord.
How To Improve Your Musical Ear:
A great way to improve your ear is to record a chord; just one single strum and let the chord fade away, as the chord fades you will notice yourself listening more intently... this is good.
Start with just this one chord, try a use a chord you think you are familiar with, give this chord an musical ID e.g., chord number 1 then say the musical ID out loud so it will be recorded before you play the chord; next strum the chord and let the chord fade away, write the chord name down in a notebook with it's musical ID next to it so you can check your answer later on.
Like this;
ID 1 = E
ID 2 = A
ID 3 = B7
Obviously it's going to be easy for a start because you will only have one chord as you get used to the sound of the chord add another chord to your collection; don't forget to give each chord their unique ID code.
Important: Knowing a chord shape and it's physical fingering is only the start, you must also know how each chord sounds, only then can you use it, only then do you own it!.
Your eyes can 'hear' consequently staring at a chord book or Guitar TAB won't improve your ear, get the chord off the page and into your head, and while we're talking about getting things into your head keep in mind that when someone refers to having an 'ear' for music what they really are referring to is someone who has a good MEMORY for sound!
That's it... your ear simply sits on the side of your head and picks up signals, it's your well trained musical memory that allows you to instantly recall a sound you are hearing and play that sound correctly on your guitar.
And now I'd like to invite you to get free access to my "How To Remember 1,000 Songs" eCourse. You can download the course for free at: http://www.guitarcoaching.com
You'll learn about hit song templates, easy chords, simple scales, red hot rhythms, and successful practice strategies in text, audio and video.

I am always being asked by beginner guitar players about the difficulty level of playing the guitar. The guitar is ubiquitous in our modern music. Only a few bands such as Keane are brave enough to play without the extensive use of the guitar. Because it is such an iconic instrument of our age everyone seems to want to play.
If so many people already play it begs the question, how hard is it to play the guitar? Well the answer is that to get started with the guitar is very easy for most people. You can buy a cheap guitar very easily or even borrow one to start with.
You can watch a few people playing the guitar and copy what they do. This is fine as far as it goes but most beginner guitar players quickly get frustrated with their learning to play the guitar. So this is what you should do to succeed as a new guitarist.
The difficulty level of learning guitar happens because most beginners are completely disorganised and approach things the wrong way. Here is how to learn to play the guitar the easiest way.
Leave Your Guitar Out Of The Case
Your guitar should be sitting there in your main room waiting to be played. You should pick your guitar up and play it every time you sit down to watch TV or read. Take 5 - 10 minutes to play through your current set of songs. I do not recommend you play everyday - that is not enough. You should play 3 times a day as a minimum. This type of regular short practice will bring you a level of competence very quickly.
Start With A Steel String Acoustic Guitar
This is a very controversial aspect of learning to play the guitar. I prefer this type of guitar to electric or classical guitar because you can learn quickly and with less technical detail in the early days. You will end up owning a whole collection of different guitars as you progress with your playing. I have 5 at the moment plus another 4 on loan to other people I know. The strings are harder to fret for beginners but you can tackle many styles of music on this type of guitar.
Follow A Good Guitar Course
You should choose a guitar learning course and work through it on a day by day basis. You can get a tutor in your home town or use one of the many online guitar lessons that are on the internet. Most of these are really excellent and allow you to learn at your own pace.

I need complex zune help?
OK here is my story. I got a zune and downloaded a lot of music from torrents and such. But i had to create my own albums, well my collection albums are up to date by my device tab isn't. I dragged them all in, dragged the songs is, dragged the artists in, and even pressed sync. On the device tab, when I'm on the Alice in chains section under artist, I'll just click anywhere and it'll show all my songs, but when i click on individual albums, only one album has songs on it out of like 3 albums, and that album only has two songs on it. I try to delete the albums that don't have songs on it but they just won't go. Then when i go to artists on my zune itself, it shows different things than what the device tab shows and the collection tab shows, i don't know how to fix this, any help will be appreciated....unless you're a dick.
first thing first...delet all the songs on your ZUne and start from the beginning. in your collection, make sure all you music has ambum, artist, and song titles. once you have everything, you should be able to select all the songs, then right click and sync with "you zunes name here". this should work, however i have never used torrents for my music (no do i know what torrents are or is) i have used limewire and using this method it has never failed me. i have tried doing to drag and drop thing with success, but it started to work intermittently so i used the method above and it works every time.

Many of us who have taught from the violin scale book by Carl Flesch have wished for a "Cliff Notes" version -- one that includes the familiar fingerings but without all the extra material, such as octaves, tenths, and parallel thirds. Of course, these have their place. But most students could benefit from a more simple (and portable) version.
Most violin scale books other than Flesch are lacking in several areas. First, they do not use the Flesch fingerings, which are widely considered to be standard in America as well as abroad. Most also lack arpeggios. Finally, they are often hard to read and/or densely spaced on the page. For these reasons, many (if not most) advanced students continue to study from the Flesch book, even though they may never use the majority of its pages.
I have also wished that a "progressive" book would come available -- one that included scales in one and two octaves rather than just three octaves. Even better would be a book including arpeggios with fingerings that are consistent not only within octaves, but between them as well.
Simply Violin: Violin Scales and Arpeggios in One, Two, and Octaves (based on Flesch) solves many of these problems. This book employs consistent fingerings. Plus, the notes are well spaced and there is ample room for the teacher to change fingerings if desired.
The two octave scales in this book are particularly nice for students who are auditioning for an intermediate youth orchestra. Further, all of them use the same fingering pattern, which allows the student to memorize them easily.
In this new book, I believe that I have found a viable alternative to Flesch that I can recommend in my shop to violin teachers who are looking for a more user-friendly version of Flesch. And, the book contains scales in one and two octaves, allowing for students of any level to begin scales and progress to Flesch fingerings in a logical and progressive way.

why are there 3 different songbooks for muse: resistance?
there are three different songbooks that contain the guitar tabs: the guitar tab book, the authentic guitar tab book, and piano, vocal, and guitar book. all three books are "authentic" but the guitar book is about $17, the "authentic" guitar book is about $40, and the part that confuses me is that the piano, vocal, and guitar book is only $22. why would the book that has the piano, vocal, and guitar be cheaper than the "authentic guitar" book. also, is the "guitar book" somehow not authentic even though the cover looks exactly like the "authentic guitar book." all three have the same exact cover and is all sold by amazon. i ordered the piano, vocal, and guitar version from amazon; hope i don't have to return it.

One way or another an antique violin has made it into your possession. Once you have gotten over the initial buzz that it is not an original Stradivarius, you settle into dealing with the question of just what do you have? And what is it worth? And how do I find out the answer to these questions?
In modern times, the first step is to realize that you are blessed to be living in the age of the greatest research tool of all time, the internet. Up until now you would have been dependent on your local area's violin enthusiasts for information and pricing for your instrument. A novice's ignorance and the local expert's control of information were used indiscriminately to take advantage of the uninformed in the past.
Now you can spend a few hours on the internet and find out about the violin market, browser search whatever clues are on the inside and outside of your violin and see multitudes of pictures of violins. There are many sites with old and antique violins for sale for you to compare your violin with. Your initial research should include reading through these sites to get an understanding of what your violin is. In the process you should come to understand a few things about the violin market.
First is that you have probably found a diamond in the rough. It may be cracked or broken or in a state of disrepair. It may cost a little or a lot to get it to salable condition and price.
Second is that it can take a long time (sometimes years) to find the person who will pay you full market value for your violin. For the discriminating buyer it can take as long to find the violin that they are suited to as well.
If you want cash for your violin and want it now, you will get a very low price compared to full market value. This is because those who will market it may have to hold it in inventory for years so they will only be willing to pay wholesale price. If it is in disrepair the price for your violin may be discounted at a retail level by those who buy violins, fix them up and then sell them. It is only fair that they buy them cheap as they will do a lot of work, have the expense of marketing the finished violin and will need to make a profit for their efforts.
You will also get some very confusing information and signals from those in the violin marketplace. It is a very diverse market and everyone has an opinion. They have varied opinions on what is a good violin, who makes good violins, who is good at repairing violins, what are the best violin accessories to add to a violin and any other facet of violins that can be open to more than one opinion. And all of these opinions are put to you the novice with great bravado by self appointed experts.
If it sounds like it is a challenge, you are beginning to understand that this little violin windfall will be a challenge. It is not easy money by any means. You may even find that for just one violin, it will hardly be worth the effort to try selling it. To even get an accurate reading on its value should cost you money. If you still want to pursue finding a value for your treasure, there is only one thing to do. You need to find and honest and qualified luthier to appraise your violin. We will now address the questions of what is such a luthier and how do I find such a person.
Luthiers (builders and repairers of stringed instruments) do not have Luthiery college or university courses. They work as understudies of reputable luthiers for years to gain the knowledge and experience from the previous generation of luthiers. So a luthier's credentials are under whom he studies and for how long. However, the most important facet of finding a good luthier is by reputation. So when you want to find a good luthier the best place to look is on the music grapevine in your community. Ask at local music stores, ask local teachers and check with local junior and senior philharmonic orchestras in your community. I cannot say that big cities are the best place to find good luthiers because many are drawn to small communities. There are state, regional and national luthier associations and they have lists of members. They offer and take courses, have seminars and offer ongoing information on their sites so this may be where you will find a luthier close to your home base. Once you have found one, you should expect to pay to have your violin appraised. This is a luthier's way of making a living and they cannot do it for free any more than you can work for free.
There is one thing that you should know about violins as you head into this process. The bottom line for value of violins is the sound. For someone to look at your violin and appraise it without ever seeing and playing it just does not work. A violin can look like anything someone wants to create. The proof of how good a violin is its sound. The proof of how good a violin is its sound. The proof of how good a violin is its sound. I wrote that 3 times at the conclusion of this article because that is how important sound is to the value of your violin.
We inherited 60 violins a few years ago. Most folks only inherit one or two. The violin marketplace is like any market niche. You need to know the technical stuff, the movers in the market and how to get full value for your goods. The folks in the violin market do not give up the inside info easily and there is nothing in the form of a violin market guide except buyer beware and seller beware. So one of my missions is to use the new publishing tools to help folks raise their awareness of the violin market, how it is constructed and how the internet is opening up this market niche. I hope you find these insights helpful and use some of the resources that I offer up.
IS their a difference between Classical guitar, and Fingerstyle Acoustic guitar?
Examples-Fingers used, differences between ways to read the music. Do not spare any details !
Classical guitars use nylon strings while other acoustic guitars use steel strings. Fingerstyle acoustic guitar players tend to use thumbpicks. They use nail or fingerpicks for their picking hands. Classical players use all nail, though there are a few that use flesh and no nail. Classical players tend to just re-interpret classical music from the Barouqe, Romantic, and Classical periods. With a few contemporary pieces. Acoustic Fingerstylists tend to perform original music and are more percussive: string smacks, beating on the sides or tops of their guitars, etc. There are many other differences but I can't think of them at the moment.

Acoustic Guitar Sheet
Acoustic Guitar Sheet

You must build up your collection of acoustic guitar music. Lessons, songs and study programs. You need them all. I even recommend backing tracks to play through. After teaching guitar for 20 years, I have learned that people who have good "libraries" become the better players. If you just search around the internet for free stuff, you are only going to get so far. Sure there are plenty of free things on the internet, but if you want to step it up and rise above the other players, you will need to become a little more serious.
Invest in some good books. You will have them for your whole life. You don't have to finish every book right away. Learn something, practice it then learn something else. Don't just throw out your guitar magazines. (Well recycle them) Keep them or at least take out the sheet music and lessons. The sheet music you find in the magazines is better than the ones you get from the free tab sites. Yeah these sites have some good stuff, but they also have some really really bad stuff.
Check out local bookstores, they have good acoustic guitar music. You don't want to skip something just because you have to pay for it. Visit the Berklee Online Bookstore. If you live close enough, just go there. It's awesome. They have a ton of stuff.
Invest in a good acoustic guitar music program. Something that goes over strum patterns, chords, scales and playing with other people. Don't just grab anything; get something that's really been proven to be good. The Hal Leonard Signature Licks stuff is fantastic. I use it all the time in my teaching. Jamorama is an unbelievable program. There is so much material for a teacher/student. Acoustic Guitar Magazine and FlatPicking Guitar magazine are both great resources too. I personally prefer Flatpicking Guitar Magazine because it's got more obscure players.
But whatever acoustic guitar music you are into, there are resources for you, but you got to take a little action and find it out. Spend a few bucks and load up your library with stuff to practice. Your acoustic guitar music is too important to skip this.
Paul Celly writes for ckoMusic. Make your guitar practice way more productive with ckoMusic guitar backing tracks and lessons.
Where can I learn acoustic guitar for free online?
I'm 14 with a lot of time on my hands, seeing as the holidays are coming up. I have absolutely no idea how to play or even tune an acoustic guitar. My brother used to play and he's got a couple of beginner sheets I don't understand. Plus I have an acoustic guitar that needs tuning. Does anyone know a website that can help me tune and play the guitar??
You're at a really good age to start learning guitar, so go for it.
There are a bunch of guitar learning websites that can help, for example http://justinguitar.com and http://www.theguitarlesson.com give free video guitar lessons.
