The ukulele is not originally Hawaiian but is actually an instrument that was introduced to Hawaii in 1879 when Joao Fernandez, a Portuguese immigrant to arrived in Honolulu aboard the Portuguese ship the Ravenscrag. He came with 500 other immigrants from the island of Madeira to work in the Sugar cane fields. Instead of working he spent much of his time playing Portugese folk songs on a borrowed cavaquinho, a small 4 string guitar shaped instrument made of pine wood. The natives he entertained thought his fingers moved like "jumping fleas". Although it is open for conjecture, this strange image is a rough translation of the Hawaiian word, "ukulele". Fernandez soon played his instrument for King David Kalakaua, Queen Emma, and Queen Liliuokalani. King David soon became a practitioner himself and introduced it to other royals. Soon local craftsmen started building and modifying the instrument. The most popular wood used in it's construction is the Hawaiian koa wood. Island musicians started trying alternate tunings and playing methods. Because of it was so portable, light weight, and had such a pleasing sound, it became the most popular instrument on the island. In Hawaiian bands since Fernandez's time, the ukulele has often been accompanied by the slack steel guitar, the mandolin, and Hawaiian drums. As it has been used in other styles of music, the uke can be accompanied by just about any musical instrument and sound great
Many people think the ukulele is strictly an Hawaiian or tropical instrument but this is far from the truth. As the ukulele grows in popularity, it is being used in almost every style of music including folk, rock, jazz, and classical. Today there are ukulele fests all over the world that offer concerts and workshops by some of the most talented players in the world. At the uke fest I went to in New York, there was one huge room filled with every style and type of ukulele. Many famous uke vendors and entertainers, like Jumping Jim Beloff, were there to display their wares. If you like unique ukes, you can buy a cigar box uke there or buy the kit to make one yourself. Jumping Jim carries his line of "Flukes" and "Flees", triangular and oval shaped ukes made of a durable plastic. They were invented by his brother in-law. They sound as good as the wooden uke and the flukes stand up by themselves! The smallest and highest pitched ukuleles are the sopranos, with the strings tuned GCEA, as are the larger tenor and concert ukes. The lower pitched and largest uke is the baritone: it is tuned like the first 4 strings of a guitar: DGBE. The Advantages Of An Outdoor Christmas Light Decoration
Perhaps one of your favorite Christmas movies is National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, its one of the all-time Christmas favorites. If you are one who treasures this Christmas classic, you probably consider the idea of this decoration as one of the funniest parts of the film. The reasons for its hilarity are completely universal; anyone who is struggled with a string of Christmas lights, whether that be an outdoor Christmas light decoration or not, knows just how absolutely maddening this decorative process can be.
Despite advancements in bulb technology that leave only the bulb that is dead out and the rest of the string on, outdoor lighting is an absolute no-no if you are day is not off to an absolutely wonderful start. Similar to the disclaimer Dont try this at home, an outdoor light decoration should only be set up by an adult, with a mind happily looking forward to the task at hand, and if you are already dreading it before you begin, do yourself a favor and wait for tomorrow, this is not to be undertaken lightly.
Where to Begin
Its best to clearly envision what you want your outdoor lighting masterpiece to look like before you begin. Think in terms of lines and colors, what do you want to create with your lighting? Undoubtedly, some people go for all white outdoor lighting, others decorate for Christmas with multi-colored lights.
It all depends on whether you want an elegant look or a fun, festive look. Think about the lines of the house that you can accentuate; of course, the most obvious is to line doorways and roof lines. Another fun option is to make garlands around any hand railings that you have, creating an inviting look.
The simplest type of an outdoor decoration is in fact not outdoors at all. The simplest way to create a festive holiday look for the exterior of your home is to place a single candle light in each window of your home.
Plugged in inside the home and completely manageable from inside, this is by far the easiest way that you can decorate the outside of your house. Its also an absolute classic when it comes to that of an outdoor decoration. The other extreme is the funhouse look, with more lights than house visible, and every tree dressed with lights. Be sure to take safety precautions if you are running this many cables outside your home and if you go for this look, dont forget the animated lawn ornaments.
Overall it is quite easy to see how important an outdoor Christmas light decoration can be.

Learn And Master The Guitar | Is It Worth It?
The guitar, has made itself known worldwide, as the symbol of rock and roll. Everyone associates a rock guitar, with rock and roll. Increasingly popular, this instrument is now the new definition of cool for many millions of youngsters. Someone who is able to play this instrument is perceived to be of a cool nature. Come on, who doesn't appreciate someone who can play the guitar well?
Lots of people find it very difficult to learn and master the guitar though. Most people I have come across think that there is some sort of special skill needed or that the person must be naturally musically inclined. This is definitely not the case. The instrument is not difficult to learn at all. If you want to master the guitar, all it takes is some proper instruction and a little bit of time.
Anyone can learn or master the guitar with a little bit of work. You do not have to be Jimi Hendrix, nor Andres Segovia. In fact, most kids learn a great deal of guitar skill, within their first year of playing. If you are persistent in your practice, you may very well be playing popular songs within a couple of months.
Your best bet for learning the guitar would be to start with lessons. They can be lessons of your choosing. You may decide that you want to take online lessons, or perhaps you may wish to see a local instructor instead. I would suggest a combination of the two. Online lessons, or a DVD set are a fantastic way to learn at your own leisure. By combining this with a personal trainer, you are well on your way to playing the guitar at a decent level.
When you get a little bit of practice under your belt, you can begin to learn a popular technique called guitar tapping. This was made famous by Van Halen. It is nothing more than using your fingers in a hammer fashion on the strings. This can be combined with strumming to give an overall good effect.
If you want to know a little bit more about this technique, there are plenty of books about it, as well as internet sites. Steven Krenz's program, is a great place to start for newcomers and experienced players alike. Guitar tapping, strumming, or perfecting chord arrangements are all things which each and every player can work on.
No matter what kind of music you are into, playing the guitar can be a very rewarding experience for anyone. The gift of musical talent is something that can be learned by just about anyone willing to sit down and give it some time. There are so many thousands of songs that you can learn as well. The sky is truly the limit when it comes to song selection. If you are involved with jazz music, there is plenty in that area, as well as rock. Remember, that practice makes perfection.

Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 to Grade 5...I've only had experience with Grade 1 and, where my brother teaches guitar, they use Grade 1 and then move on to different books--not sure if they only use those Mel Bay books.

Did Jimi Hendrix play Mastermind and Gypsy Woman in Woodstock '69?
Looking at different setlist of that concert in several internet sites, it looks like Hendrix played "Mastermind" and "Gypsy woman" songs back in Woodstock, but in the DVDs that contain "full recordings" of the show I can't find those songs in the info of the DVD.
There must be happening one of these things:
a) Hendrix did not play those 2 songs.
b) The available DVDs are just not as complete as they seem, and they're missing the songs.
c) The songs were linked and played after a previous song without stop, and so some people may not consider them "songs" but just "improvisation" or an extension of their previous songs.
Do you have any useful info about this? Can you help me with this?
He did play those two songs and a bootleg live recording does exist with the songs intact in the correct order as played at woodstock. The reason they have not been released on an Official release is that they were written by Larry Lee and not by Hendrix so the rights to the songs do not belong to the estate (experience hendrix) and it would appear that an agreement either could not be reached for the rights to include them on the CD/DVD releases or Janie Hendrix (who controls EH) did not wish to have non-hendrix recordings documented as part of the Woodstock performance.
