About the Author
What is a good website for learning about guitar music theory?
I guess I don't understand scales, how anyone writes their own songs, etc.
I like this website for theory:
http://www.emusictheory.com/learning.html
Also do searches on specfic terms such as: Modes, Scales, Keys, Progressions, Time Signatures, etc.
Theory is something that will take you time and practice to understand and grasp, until you can use it efficiently.
Learning scales will only help you, if you know what a scale really is. A scale is just a map of all the notes in a certain key. A standard major or minor key will contain 7 notes. The scale of that major or minor key maps out where all those 7 notes are for the guitar or any other instrument.

Play Lessons
Play Lessons

Playing fast is one of every guitarist dreams. But, there is always something that holds them back. They can't do that because they think that it is not easy to do and they're having a hard time doing it. The fact is it is not, there are techniques that makes it easy to play fast.
Playing fast doesn't mean you have to study sweep picking arpeggios. Many guitarist hate that technique, me too. I hate that because it doesn't sounds good to my ear. Don't worry we're not going to do that. We do it the easy way. Our main goal here is to make a great music.
Play smarter rather than harder. This is our golden rule here.
Play on a single string scale. Use the first string high E note. You can pick any scale of your favorite if you want. Playing on a single string makes it the easiest to play fast because you can see the notes of the scale in a single line.
Remember, start slowly and then gradually increase your speed.
1.Alternate Pick the string four times per note using the chromatic scale shown below
e----8-8-8-8--7-7-7-7--6-6-6-6--5-5-5-5--------
B----------------------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------
2.Use an open string as a variation
e----0-0-8-8-0-0-7-7-0-0-6-6-0-0-5-5--------
B-------------------------------------------------
G-------------------------------------------------
D-------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------
e----0-0-0-8-0-0-0-7-0-0-0-6-0-0-0-5-~-----
B-------------------------------------------------
G-------------------------------------------------
D-------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------
3.Use an open string scale. For example, an A minor scale triplet run on high E string.
(A minor scale = A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A)
e----0-1-3---0-3-5---0-5-6---0-6-8---0-8-10---0-10-12-~-------
B-----------------------------------------------------------------------
G-----------------------------------------------------------------------
D-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A-----------------------------------------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------------------------------------
4.Use hammer-on and pull-off. Pick only the first note then hammer-on and pull-off the remaining notes on the string. Below is a D Aeolian scale in high E string D-E-F-G-A-A#-B-C-D.
e----5h6h7--7p6p5---6h8h10--10p8p6---8h10h12--12p10p8-~---
B-------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-------------------------------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.Now combined them with tapping. Tap the first note then hammer-on and pull-off the remaining notes.
e---- T12--0h1h3---T12--0h3h5---T12--0h5h6-T12--0h6h8---T12--0h8h10-T13--0h10h12-~-
B---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
e----T12--5h6h7--7p6p5----T12--6h8h10--T10h8h6----T13--8h10h12--T12h10h8-~---------
B-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After you become comfortable with any of this technique try to do it with the remaining string. These lessons are only example that gives you great idea that will tremendously add to your musical dictionary. Try to be creative and make some experiment or variations for every possibility that will make it sound very musical.

I am teaching swim lessons and need new games to play at the end of the lesson. Any ideas?
I started teaching swim lessons three nights a week at the beginning of September and some of the games seem to be getting a little bit repetitive! The kids range from 4-6 years old and are of totally different ability levels. Any ideas on what we could play?
I taught swim lessons for 9 years. I used to play a version of monkey in the middle with the little guys. Basically one child gets to go in the middle while everyone else holds hands (use noodles or floaties if they cant touch) and the child in the middle gets to choose what type of animal they want to be--then everyone sings "An Elephant in the middle, an elephant in the middle, an elephant in the middle, SWIM out elephat, SWIM out!!" You do this while going in a circle like ring around the rosies.
You could do horse races on noodles. Line them all up on the wall, every child mounted on a noodle like a horse and you their leader send them off in search of the west (a wall or treasure on the bottom of the pool or something with the endpoint being to reach the end point first). You can do the "da-dunt-da-dada-dum-dada, da-dunt-dada-dada-dunt-dada" classical western theme song as they go.
We also used to do just treasure hunts. Tossing toys underwater around the pool.
The big thing is that every game should incorporate a skill they need to work on without even knowing it. The Monkey in the Middle, forces them to swim out either above water or underwater, the horse race forces them to concentrate on balance and power, the treasure hunt forces them to swim underwater blowing air from their noses (hopefully)
Have fun!
EDIT: In my experience, I found that water polo between the ages that you have specified is not a good game for them to play. Generally it is a ten and up thing.

Guitar Fingerstyle
Guitar Fingerstyle

One way or another an antique violin has made it into your possession. Once you have gotten over the initial buzz that it is not an original Stradivarius, you settle into dealing with the question of just what do you have? And what is it worth? And how do I find out the answer to these questions?
In modern times, the first step is to realize that you are blessed to be living in the age of the greatest research tool of all time, the internet. Up until now you would have been dependent on your local area's violin enthusiasts for information and pricing for your instrument. A novice's ignorance and the local expert's control of information were used indiscriminately to take advantage of the uninformed in the past.
Now you can spend a few hours on the internet and find out about the violin market, browser search whatever clues are on the inside and outside of your violin and see multitudes of pictures of violins. There are many sites with old and antique violins for sale for you to compare your violin with. Your initial research should include reading through these sites to get an understanding of what your violin is. In the process you should come to understand a few things about the violin market.
First is that you have probably found a diamond in the rough. It may be cracked or broken or in a state of disrepair. It may cost a little or a lot to get it to salable condition and price.
Second is that it can take a long time (sometimes years) to find the person who will pay you full market value for your violin. For the discriminating buyer it can take as long to find the violin that they are suited to as well.
If you want cash for your violin and want it now, you will get a very low price compared to full market value. This is because those who will market it may have to hold it in inventory for years so they will only be willing to pay wholesale price. If it is in disrepair the price for your violin may be discounted at a retail level by those who buy violins, fix them up and then sell them. It is only fair that they buy them cheap as they will do a lot of work, have the expense of marketing the finished violin and will need to make a profit for their efforts.
You will also get some very confusing information and signals from those in the violin marketplace. It is a very diverse market and everyone has an opinion. They have varied opinions on what is a good violin, who makes good violins, who is good at repairing violins, what are the best violin accessories to add to a violin and any other facet of violins that can be open to more than one opinion. And all of these opinions are put to you the novice with great bravado by self appointed experts.
If it sounds like it is a challenge, you are beginning to understand that this little violin windfall will be a challenge. It is not easy money by any means. You may even find that for just one violin, it will hardly be worth the effort to try selling it. To even get an accurate reading on its value should cost you money. If you still want to pursue finding a value for your treasure, there is only one thing to do. You need to find and honest and qualified luthier to appraise your violin. We will now address the questions of what is such a luthier and how do I find such a person.
Luthiers (builders and repairers of stringed instruments) do not have Luthiery college or university courses. They work as understudies of reputable luthiers for years to gain the knowledge and experience from the previous generation of luthiers. So a luthier's credentials are under whom he studies and for how long. However, the most important facet of finding a good luthier is by reputation. So when you want to find a good luthier the best place to look is on the music grapevine in your community. Ask at local music stores, ask local teachers and check with local junior and senior philharmonic orchestras in your community. I cannot say that big cities are the best place to find good luthiers because many are drawn to small communities. There are state, regional and national luthier associations and they have lists of members. They offer and take courses, have seminars and offer ongoing information on their sites so this may be where you will find a luthier close to your home base. Once you have found one, you should expect to pay to have your violin appraised. This is a luthier's way of making a living and they cannot do it for free any more than you can work for free.
There is one thing that you should know about violins as you head into this process. The bottom line for value of violins is the sound. For someone to look at your violin and appraise it without ever seeing and playing it just does not work. A violin can look like anything someone wants to create. The proof of how good a violin is its sound. The proof of how good a violin is its sound. The proof of how good a violin is its sound. I wrote that 3 times at the conclusion of this article because that is how important sound is to the value of your violin.
We inherited 60 violins a few years ago. Most folks only inherit one or two. The violin marketplace is like any market niche. You need to know the technical stuff, the movers in the market and how to get full value for your goods. The folks in the violin market do not give up the inside info easily and there is nothing in the form of a violin market guide except buyer beware and seller beware. So one of my missions is to use the new publishing tools to help folks raise their awareness of the violin market, how it is constructed and how the internet is opening up this market niche. I hope you find these insights helpful and use some of the resources that I offer up.
IS their a difference between Classical guitar, and Fingerstyle Acoustic guitar?
Examples-Fingers used, differences between ways to read the music. Do not spare any details !
Classical guitars use nylon strings while other acoustic guitars use steel strings. Fingerstyle acoustic guitar players tend to use thumbpicks. They use nail or fingerpicks for their picking hands. Classical players use all nail, though there are a few that use flesh and no nail. Classical players tend to just re-interpret classical music from the Barouqe, Romantic, and Classical periods. With a few contemporary pieces. Acoustic Fingerstylists tend to perform original music and are more percussive: string smacks, beating on the sides or tops of their guitars, etc. There are many other differences but I can't think of them at the moment.

I want to learn to play the blues tune in this song on acoustic guitar in the easiest way possible...?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM32RxwAycs --- theres the typical blues tune in this song but i want to learn to play it on acoustic, who can describe what to play? Also if you could tell me how like this " index finger on 3rd string, hit twice" for example, that would be great.
Your question is kinda hard to understand. That song is bad to the bone by george thourogood. He plays it with a slide in open tuning , probably open G. You can play it on acoustic the same way. May not sound too great but you can do it. Your tuning would be G , B, G, D, B, G from high to low. Experiment with it and find your own way to make it sound good. Improvise man , Thats' what blues guitar is all about. Good luck to ya!
