Is Sex All That Matters?
"What more could have been said?" I wondered, left with a feeling of content, after reading Joyce Garity's essay "Is Sex All That Matters?" Able to identify with her on most of her viewpoints of the world in which we live in today, I felt some of the weight being lifted from off my shoulders; relieved that I'm not the only human in this world looking upon magazine and TV ads, with half-naked models posing as sex exploits, as a brainwashing on people's minds.
We are influenced by our society, culture and most of all what we perceive. There isn't a magazine, television commercial or billboard advertisement in Times Square that's not giving or sending out a sexual message to people. These ads are intended for viewers to believe in their fantasies and promises that if you don't buy and wear a certain pair of jeans, you won't look sexy or, if you don't buy and wear a certain cologne or perfume, no man will ever want you, or even if you don't look thin and petite you won't have a social life because being skinny is considered beautiful. In most American commercials, literally, a man and woman run around chasing each other on a beach half-naked; lovingly they embrace each other and kiss, implying "Forget about reality, let's make love. Forget about the fact that you might have a disease, and I have a big chance of getting pregnant. Forget about it." The more people watch these commercials, the more they believe these intended messages to be true. Forget about everything, only love and passion matters! Wrong! Today, the statistics on people diagnosed with having a sexually transmitted disease is high, and the statistics on young teens becoming impregnated is high. And, because of these teens having babies that they're unable to take care of, there are millions of children in foster care right now without any real place to call home.
In her essay, Joyce Garity, a social worker, hits every subject pertaining to “sex in media” and pinpoints what negative messages the world is sending out to our youth today. She refers to one girl in particular. Elaine had come to live with her for a while. Troubled and nearly lonesome in the world, she was pregnant again with her second child while her first child had already been placed in a foster home. When asked by Garity why she allowed herself to become pregnant again, she said she thought birth control and condoms to be unromantic and embarrassing; one couldn't really be passionate with sex and worry about using contraceptives at the same time. In other words, Elaine was just another brainwashed individual, lost in a fantasy where negativity doesn’t exist. Forget about reality!
How can we deprogram the damage that has been done by the media? We can start by self-educating ourselves through self-help books. Through self-educating ourselves, we obtain knowledge and through knowledge come a transformation of our way of thinking, acting and feeling. Let’s start making our own conclusions as to how we should live based on righteous morals and norms.

How do you change viola parts in a music piece so that a cello can play it?
How do you change viola parts in a music piece so that a cello can play it? There is already a cello part but we are short of a viola and have an extra cello...how do we do it. There is a violin and two cellos and we would like to play this piece.
Well, there are two things to consider.
First, the viola and cello usually read in different clefs. The viola (alto) clef puts middle C on the middle line of the staff. The cello usually reads in bass clef, where middle C is on the first ledger line above the staff.
If the cellist is not used to reading alto clef, one tip is to imagine 3 additional lines below the staff. Draw them in if necessary (at least at the beginning of the piece). These lines would be the bottom 3 lines of the staff in bass clef. It takes a bit of getting used to.
The other thing to consider is that the cello cannot play as high as the viola. On passages that go above the cellos range, you must play the notes an octave lower. (Ideally you would re-voice the harmony for the instruments you have, but jumping down the octave would be easiest and won't sound too strange if you plan when to do it.)
The range thing may not be an issue in easier pieces where the viola part stays in the middle of its range. The cellist must be adept at playing in the higher range though.
I love the sound of celli. Once you figure it out, I bet the piece will sound great!

Chasing The Perfect Golf Swing
Even the guys who play golf for a living and get the best golf instruction in the world still struggle to improve their golf swing and they practice each and every day. When your golf swing is off and you're playing golf badly it isn't a lot of fun, but you can change it if you apply yourself. Golf is a difficult game to master and most golfers just don't have the time it takes to practice, practice, and practice to significantly improve it.
Golf requires tough mental fitness as well as physical fitness and this is often overlooked. Keep the good positive energy flowing and don't give in to any negative thoughts. On the golf course focus or concentrate totally on your swing and you'll get the best score. Don't let unrelated thoughts slip in. Say to yourself 'be here now' to stay focused. As you swing, visualize exactly where you want the ball to land.
At the end of a proper golf swing, the weight should have shifted almost entirely to the left foot, with the body fully turned to the left and the hands should be above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the back. The most important thing about the golf swing is the angle, not the strength that's applied to it. That is only one of many swing secrets. Ask your club golf pro to evaluate your posture and biomechanics while you're swinging.
Swing slowly and steadily using good rhythm. And make sure not to grip the golf club too tightly.
Many golfers who are left-handed prefer the right-handed golf swing. Now at the end of a backswing the hands are above the right shoulder with the golf club pointing more or less in the intended direction of the ball flight. When you swing, if you have a problem with your left knee buckling, imagine holding a soccer ball between your knees.
Make sure to use the basic 'hitchhiker' position when working on your back swing. One of the problems that most inexperienced golfers share is that they think much too much about their swing.
Most golfers don't know that there are techniques that will greatly affect swing mechanics. You can get an edge by changing your approach. You can get rid of any annoying shoulder problems with some simple techniques. In order to prevent injury and improve swing speed and distance your body needs to be strong and flexible. Using some simple tips, techniques and stretches, you can increase your drives by up to 20 yards in a short period of time.
Keep in mind that with some golf swing trainers, you may still need some help from an expert. And most of all you don't want to waste your money on a golf swing aid you don't need or will never use. If you're looking for a golf swing trainer to improve your stance they are easy to find.
There are swing aids that will act as driving range simulators too. And you can find golf trainers that will help you with your wrist and arm position. There are golf swing aids to help you with your swing alignment.
Before you buy any aid or trainer for your swing, check with an expert to get an idea of what problem you need to work on first; for example, back lift of golf swing, momentum of downward thrust or your stance. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or just starting out, get just one trainer or aid and go to work on your natural, proper golf swing. Look for golf swing trainers at your local golf course too.
And need I mention that with plenty of practice, a super golf swing will be the end result. There are hundreds of free and simple golf tips to seek out in consumer and sports magazines, in books, ebooks, software and DVDs both, online and offline. And if you apply both mental and physical workouts, your reward will be super golf swing improvement.
It's important to just try to relax and enjoy your game while you play. And when you play a round of golf, concentrate on your putting, improving your golf swing or something specific for that day. Always have a plan in mind.

So Whitney Houston is Back on Stage Live
Did you hear that? Whitney returns to stage singing her most famous tunes. Yes, I know her performance was not the best last Tuesday night in Birmingham but she is still one of the most powerful singers I have ever heard. I listened to her performance of "I Will Always Love You" and I was astonished by her interpretation of the original version (originally written by Dolly Parton) of the same song.
That made me think of all the options that you have when you are arranging a song, or just playing it on the guitar. First of all must know what you can do with your voice. Then you must spend enough time playing around with the melody until you own it. When I am learning a new song on the guitar I always listen to more than one version and only then I sit down to see what I can do with it.
Of course, knowing the basic chord changes is key, but then you must feel totally free to use your material, whether it be a particular chord whose inversion you like or a rhythmic accompaniment that you feel is right for you. Ignore what your friends might say...just take pleasure in playing with the basic structure of the tune and see where it leads too.
This can be applied to soloing as well! Many young guitar players who are still learning how to play a solo on the guitar spend lots of time copying the solos of their guitar heroes. That's ok, but as you progress, you must let your creativity take over and ultimately develop your style.
I still love to spend some time studying lines and arrangements of my favorite guitar players. These days, I am studying lots of lines from a Joe Pass' transcription book and I feel funny when I play those exact licks that made him so famous. But then, I start to noodle around and eventually find my way to Include those ideas into my personal style. After over 20 years I still am passionate about exploring my guitar as if it was the first time I was playing it.
In conclusion, I want to thank Whitney Houston for reminding me that it's critical to learn as many styles as possible and never define yourself as a jazz, soul, country or classical player. Quick question for song arrangement?
I know I already asked this but I would like some more answers.
I've written a song on an acoustic guitar but it has an electric part. In my band I'm the lead singer and lead guitarist and I have a rhythm guitarist. I wanna play acoustic just because I want it to have feeling and I also want an electric guitar solo.
Should I play the acoustic guitar or should the rhythm guitarist?
It's a love song I wrote for a girl. just so you know
play electric but with an acoustic pedal, then when its solo time, turn it off, click on your distortion pedal and maybe overdrive, put on the bridge pickup and wail out that solo for that girl you like.
