Playing Shaman Drums In Indian Ceremonies and Drumming Groups
Looking for an easy way to give your home decor southwestern or country flare? Try including Shaman drums along with your Native American style home furnishings like I did. My love for these unique, American Indian drums started right after my husband and I bought our new home last year. We knew that because of our love for the old west, we wanted true southwestern and Native American style decor with unique rustic home furnishings.
Once that was determined I started filling my new home with beautiful southwestern and Native American pieces that would go with my rustic decor and entertain my guests by telling a story at the same time. That is when I came across how simple it was to give my home that beautiful southwest style that you see in designer home magazines, by decorating with shaman drums.
Maybe you are like me when I first started digging into the history and meaning of Native American drums, and have only a vague idea of what the Shamans drum is. Or, maybe you are wondering how to choose the best drum to play in your Shaman drum circle.
Whatever the case, it is important to understand the significance this raw hide drum plays in Native American culture so you can develop a true appreciation for its art and let its power lead you in the right direction.
If you are fortunate enough to be present at a Shamanic ceremony you will notice that the Shaman, or spiritual leader, will beat a unique looking raw hide hand drum with a soft mallet to create the soothing monotonous beat needed to take him to an altered mental state. During this altered state of mind, called the Shamanic journey, the spiritual leader receives healing and spiritual powers he uses to help his people.
If you look closely at the Shaman's drum you will realize that unlike many other leather Native American drums used during tribal ceremonies, these rustic drums have natural raw hide, stretched over a wood frame on one side and are laced with raw hide string on the other side.
They don't have the loop hold like many other tribal drums do. A drum made in this way allows for a natural hand holding position so you can be in full contact with the drum and easily manipulate the sound that is very important in bringing out the right tones needed to take you on your Shamanic journey.
You will also notice that many Shaman drums have symbolic paintings on the rawhide playing surface. These unique southwestern symbols often depict a map of the universe or symbols of spiritual powers you can use to guide you in your meditating and journeying experience.
If you are using the drum for Shamanic work, take time to study the significance of the painting. Since the southwest paintings have a special power that influences the journey, you want to make sure it is in agreement with your own practices and influences you in that direction.
Also, I like to check the quality of the drum before choosing. It's critical to make sure there are no thin places at the points where the cords of the drumhead are attached. This is important for the quality and life of your Shaman drum and will save you money in the long run by not having to have it repaired or buy a new one.
Most focus is placed on the drum alone but don't forget to choose the right striking mallet so you can enjoy the resonating sound of these native drums to its fullest.
You will find that there are many different types of mallets that create different tones from the drum and although I personally like using a mallet with a fur covered head, it is a matter of what you like best.
Whether you are purchasing Native American musical instruments such as drums to add to your home decor or are using it to lead you in your spiritual journey, you will no doubt fall in love with the true Native American style and southwest charm added to your life and home by Shaman drums.

How far can you go with learning to play the drums, without an actual drum kit?
I really want to learn to play the drums but I don't yet have the resources nor the place to play an acoustic or electronic drum kit. I wanted to know how far can I go with learning, without a drum kit.
You could spend $20 on a good single practice pad and it is no different than practicing on a real snare drum for the most part. You could take snare drumming as far as you want to on a pad. If you can spend $150 this practice pad set would allow you to do anything (in terms of practice) that you could do on a real set.

Drum Building 101 - How Much Time And Money Will I Need To Invest?
The very first drum set I ever built was this: A 3 piece drum set (10” tom, 14” tom, and a 20” kick drum) that was stained blue and had gold “bling bling” hardware. I later built a snare drum to match the set but it came out a slightly lighter shade of blue than the other drums (more about that learning experience in another article).
This drum set was my first ever experience with drum building. Before building this I had never worked with wood, I did not consider myself a crafty handyman, and I had never stained anything, unless you count grass s and coffee stains! A couple of years before building my first drum set I become friends with a guy named Kevin. Kevin owned (and still owns) a recording studio in town. Kevin was the first person to introduce me to the idea of building my own drum set. He had a custom drum set in his recording studio that sounded amazing. When he told me that he made it with his bare hands I flipped out. When he told me how little he spent to make it I flipped out yet again. He had ordered all the materials for the set, stained it, put a clear coat on it, and assembled it…and HE RECORDS THAT DRUM SET ON 90% OF HIS STUDIO PROJECTS!
My first build took about 2 weeks to get supplies shipped to me, 2 weeks to complete and cost me approximately $950. I do not have the receipt to prove it, but this (see resource box) 5 piece drum set was built in 3 weeks for $1,369 (that’s includes shells, hardware, hoops, drum heads, cutting the bearing edges, layout for hardware, rims mounts, tom arms, AND SHIPPING). Here (see resource box) is the receipt for all the materials.
In comparison take a look at what other “custom” drum companies want to charge you for essentially the same drum set. These prices are taken straight from the drum company’s websites, and no I am not kidding, go see for yourself. To clarify I am pricing out this drum set: 8” tom, 10” tom, 14” tom, 16” tom, 20” kick all with standard hardware, stained with a high gloss finish.
Company A advertised price - $3,425 – doesn’t include shipping
Company B advertised price - $4,225 – doesn’t include shipping
Company C advertised price - $4,125 – doesn’t include shipping
Cost of building your own - $1,369 – includes shipping
Honestly most custom drum companies will sell you drums for less than their advertised prices so let’s say you get a 30% discount.
Company A unadvertised 30% off “Artist Pricing” – $ 2,397.5
Company B unadvertised 30% off “Artist Pricing” – $2,957.5
Company C unadvertised 30% off “Artist Pricing - $2,887.5
Cost of building your own - $1,369 – includes shipping
As you can see, it really does cost less to build custom vs. buying custom. The real financial danger is that after you make your first drum, you'll want to build more!
Now that you know how much money building a drum set will cost you, let’s talk about how much time you need to build yourself a professional level drum set. When your thinking about how much time it will take to build a drum set you need to keep in mind what type of finish you want on your drums. The general rule that I have observed is that wrapping a drum or drum set can be done in an extremely short amount of time compared to painting, staining, or applying a high gloss finish. Building a drum set that is wrapped can be done in a matter of days, (even hours for the more experienced drum builders) simply because you don’t have to wait for stain, paint or clear coats to dry. If you want to stain your drums and apply a high gloss finish, you’ll need at least 3 weeks to build up your clear coats and for the shells to fully dry. Wrapping your drum takes less time, but the material to wrap your drums will cost more. Applying a stain and high gloss finish is usually cheaper, but takes much longer. My advice if you’re looking to save money and get a quick turnaround for a custom drum set is to stain it and apply a satin finish.

what is the best snare drum heas for rock/punk drumming?
the snare drum that came with my kit has a kinda plastic skin and it has an annoying ringing that ruins the sound of the drum. I know that you can get e rings and moon gel and such to get rid of this ringing but im planning to get a new snare head anyway so id thought id wait and see if i need to muffle it. any advice on what kinda of snare head to get?
I agree 100% with TR...nothing beats Remo drum heads.
Try a Remo " Pinstripe" head or a Remo "Emperor" head. Pinstirpe heads are more popular. i only use Remo pinstipre heads because I know they last long and have good tone to them. They are both 2 play...which means they will last you longer in the long run. They are normally $12 per drum head.

Junior Drum Sets Can Be Both Educational And Fun
Some people are born with a musical gift; some have great rhythm, why not encourage that trait by looking into starter drum sets. Junior kits are basic and help you to offer everything you need.
Drum sets come in all configurations, if your youngster has the skills and you want to help them develop their skills you will find junior drum sets that are perfect starter sets. As they continue to develop you can always add pieces until you have a full kit.
Its best to supply your stick twirler lots of space for their drum set, make sure you commune in an area that allows your kid drummer to not disturb the peace but allow them the opportunity to discover their musical talents. Junior drum sets are made just for junior drummers; they come with the standard five piece junior drum kits, a bass drum, two tom-toms, a snare, and cymbals.
Musical instruments are an investment in your kid's creativity and although guitar video games seem to prevail the gaming world, there is still a need for drummers to keep the beat. You never are sure if your child will pursue music as a profession and child drum kits are the best foundation in which to start.
Besides being the rhythm of the band kids have tons of energy and when you can give them an outlet like drumming to express it you might realize they have more enjoyment focusing on a art like drumming. You can also expand their starter drum sets as they improve, it's also a great exercise and who wouldn't love to get their children off the couch once in a while.
If you look at today's video game market all the creativity is in the game itself. All you have to do is push the buttons in order to move to another level, some people say its good hand eye coordination, but its not. Put the creativity into your young ones hands, such as a pair of drumsticks. There are lots of drummers they can look up to and try to gain insight from. Your kids will surprise you when it comes to their originality.
Junior drum sets are developmental, what better way to tell your child that you want to improve their musical direction. I'm positive a lot of parents would shy away from drum sets in their house because of the sound but it would be far worse to find out that your child wanted to play drums but didn't have your support.
Experiencing music is great for a child's growth, drums are part of the musical library and when you see your child concentrate and focus on learning how to become better you will know that drum kits support their talent.
Child drum sets are an inexpensive way to help them find their musical abilities as well. If your child acts interested in drumming you could help them determine if they really want to go in that direction. Look at starter drum sets that are made for kids and then help them pursue a set that will give them the tools they need to become accomplished musicians.

what is the drum rhythm in the beginning of the song calling all angels by train. one of the rhythms starts at 10 seconds in the youtube video and the second one starts at about 20 seconds. i've been trying to figure it out for a while but i don't really play drums so it's too hard, but i really want to know what it is. So if someone can tell what the rhythm is by listening please try and describe it on here or give a link to a website that has it or something. Thank you.

Drum Building 101 – How To Wrap A Drum Shell
First you will need to cut your wrap to size. An easy way to do this is to wrap it around your drum shell and mark the edge of the shell all the way around. Some wrap manufacturers don’t make wrap to go all the way around large drums, so you’ll end up having to use 2 pieces for larger drums – mark your cut line around the top of the shell. You may use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the wrap. Sparkles are a little easier to cut than glass glitter wraps. Plan on sharpening your scissors frequently if you need to cut a lot of wrap.
After you cut your wrap to the length of your shell, you’ll need to cut it down to the diameter of your shell. An easy way to do this is to use a flexible measuring tape (for sewing) to measure all the way around the shell and add an extra inch for overlap.
Now lay the wrap down flat and measure out that distance and use a straight edge to mark your next cut. Now lay your wrap down flat on the ground and mark the center of the wrap on a piece of tape. Now you need to do a test fit with your wrap. The age old question has always been “Where should the seam go?” Most drum companies do this: Toms; under a lug, kick; on the bottom where it can’t be seen, Snare; under the strainer to hide it. You will want no less than 1” of overlap for your seam. To make sure you line up your seam when gluing you’ll need to get your test fit wrapped around the drum as tight as possible, with your seam lined up in your designated area, and then transfer the center mark on your wrap to the edge of the shell. Also mark each end of your wrap where the overlap is on the shell.
To achieve maximum adhesion you’ll need to scuff/rough up the shell and the back side of the wrap. The best way to do this is to use 80 grit sand paper and sand the entire surface of the drum and the back of the wrap (don’t sand through your wrap). You’ll also need to peel back the protective plastic on the front of the wrap where your seam will be, measure your 1 inch seam and tape off the area you don’t want to scuff up or get glue on, and sand this down as well.
You can even lightly score the seam with a razor blade.
Lay your shell on a flat surface with your center mark facing you, then grab your wrap also with your center mark facing you, and ever so slightly scoot your wrap closer to the shell until you finally connect in the center, lining up the marks. This step is critical because once your wrap and shell touch, there is no going back.
Scoot your wrap across the table to line up the marks you made on the shell and the wrap.
Apply pressure from the center‐out, slowly wrapping the wrap around the shell. Make sure that you wrap the correct edge of your seam down first; you want to cover up the sanded part of the wrap with the clean part. Before you adhere the seam together, remove the piece of tape that masked the seam area or else you chance getting some tape stuck inside your seam! Now you need to apply some pressure all around the drum to get out any bubbles that might have formed! You can use a j‐roller going from the center‐out.
Also take special care at rolling the seam to make sure it is good and tight.
Sometimes when you apply a wrap you’ll end up spiraling the wrap which looks like this ... You can use scissors to cut this flush with the edge of the shell, or what I’ve found to be the best at trimming down the wrap is a tool made by Skil called the Auto Sharp Power Cutter.

Easy Drum Tutorials for Beginners
Looking for simple drum tutorials can help playing drums? Here’s an easy drum lessons designed for full starters. These lessons will present a synopsis of necessary basic drumming skills needed as a base knowledge for starters.
In order to begin learning to play the drums, you must study how to read the sheet music. To do this, you should acquaint yourself to the different symbols utilized in indicating elements of the drum set.
The High Hats – these are described as “x” symbol in the sheet music. There are two styles of playing the hi-hats: either by hitting with the drumstick or using your left foot on the pedal attached to the hi-hats.
The Ride Cymbal also uses “x” symbol as a notation. This part is usually played during heavy rock music, and normally done by moderate drum player.
The Snare Drum is the central part and the most valuable part of a drum set. The beat made by the drum to combine with the other musical instruments is made by the snare drum. This part should be given special considerations in learning and should be known by heart.
The bass drum is played synchronously with the snare drum, which turnouts a very desirable beat when the sounds are mixed. The bass drum makes the lowest frequency sound in the drum set. It is played by hitting the right foot on the drum pedal.
Counting the time must be studied to accurately play the drum beat. You can begin studying the proper timing and counting by practicing in a single drum, while reading the drum notes given by the trainer. The instructor will give you techniques as well as the things to know about the beat.
You think you’re ready for your first recital; it’s time to play the piece that puts all the parts of the drum. Always keep counting out load to guide your beat in playing.
Keep in mind that encouragement is the essential in learning how to play drum really well. After studying the standard skills in playing the drums, try practicing the more advanced lessons to further ameliorate your talent.

DRUMS: are the drums easy to learn?
Im really interested in playing the drums.
But I dont want to play if they're hard. Sounds silly. But i dont care.
I would love to be in a band.
How long would it take me to get good.
Is it easy to read the tabs/music ect?
ANY TIPS PLEASE!
Well it all depends on your natural talent. They will be hard if you have no rhythm.
Music is easy enough to read.
How long to get good depends on your natural ability, your teacher, your ability to learn, etc. Naturally the longer you play the better you get.
